Art & Wine in the Park  -  Sunday, June 14, 2009, 11 to 5pm  -  Fortuna

2006 Art & Wine in the Park.

If you can't make it to Fortuna's beautiful Rohner Park for this event, check it out on the webcams! We'll have several inside the event.

Fortuna uncorks a day of wine tasting, art, food and music on Sunday at Art and Wine in the Park. Local wineries will have representatives pouring tastes and others have donated wine being poured by festival volunteers. Still more wineries from all over California have wines coming up to be tasted. "It is a good way to discover wines you haven't tried and have a lot of examples side-by-side," says Kevin Johnson, "most people get into a rut with one or two wines."

Johnson, manager of the wine and grocery store Beverage Plus Foods, is a member of the group that has sponsored the charity event since 1998, the Rotary Club of Fortuna. "People come from all over for this," he said.

"Art and Wine in the Park" is organized by the Fortuna Rotary Club and is held in Rohner Park in Fortuna. Local wineries will bring out their finest to taste along with wines from all around Northern California and beyond.

North Coast artists and craftspeople will display their work on the park grounds directly across from the wine tasting area. Vendors will sell everything from clothing and jewelry to wind chimes, plants and paintings. Photography, oil and acrylic paintings, woodcraft, ceramics, jewelry and folk crafts will be on display and for sale.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars brings their deep-pit barbecue feast to the picnic area next to the festival. The VFW will serve deep-pit barbecued tri-tip along with salads, bread and desserts from noon until four that afternoon. Local foods and produce are featured in the wine tasting area with Loleta Cheese, barbecued Humboldt-grown oysters and Fortuna-grown strawberries and a chocolate fountain.

The Fortuna Rotary Club holds a drawing for a selection of wine. Three winners will receive 50, 30 and 20 bottles, respectively.

Proceeds from the festival go to fund Fortuna Rotary's community projects. Admission to the festival is free. Festival-goers over 21 can purchase tasting glasses for $15 a piece at the event. Drawing tickets are $10. For more information call the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce at 725-3959.
